Beautification of Benin City: Heralding A New Dawn

FOR some weeks now, there has been serious work at the King Square, otherwise known as Ring road, the work that we have been expecting (Beautification), and the work that most of us know will put glamour in the face of the “Ancient City” (Benin City).
Talking about the “ancient city” Benin City is known as the ancient city for several reasons which includes that first of all, Benin City is one of the oldest city in the world, secondly, because of her numerous monuments which cannot be quantified, her monuments are so unique.
Indeed she is an ancient city, which deserve the best in all ramification, so the plans of the state Governor to beautify the state, turning Benin City into glamorous ancient city which some part has been challenges with flood coming out with unimaginable look, where grasses and flowers will surrounds the King square, trees will be planted to protect our environment and add value “to the ancient city”.
It should be recalled that beautification of the state is part of the plans of the State Government to restore the state back to its original Master Plan. In ensuring this task, the State Government has to make machineries available for the job, which includes creating a task force to forestall street trading in the state metropolis especially around the Ring road area which is the Eye of the city. The eye of the city in the sense that the King Square (also known as Ring Road) links to almost all the major roads in the town, major road which includes, Akpakpava road, Mission road, Ekenwan road, Sapele road, Airport Road, Sakponba road, Forestry road and Plymouth road.
You can now understand, when we describe the Ring road as the “eye of the city”. Though some areas in the state metropolis, will be beautified but at the moment, attention, infact maximum attention is been given to Ring road area.
Some times in life, when we see innovation, it is difficult to believe that it’s a timely innovation until when the dividend becomes “visible”. In few months from now, people will find it difficult to believe that this is Benin City especially when they gets to some major junctions in the state metropolis, where flowers, grasses, trees and all gaggets to bring the “Real Beauty” of the state out is mounted.
There is going to be a dual fencing on the flowers to protect the flowers from been step upon which he said the fence will be erected with net which help to prevent people entering the places where the flower and grasses will be planted.
People will not be allowed to park at the Ring road so as not to damage the planted flowers, grasses or trees; and any vehicle that its parked on the areas where beautification is going on (Ring road) will be impounded and the owner of such vehicle will be made to pay fine for obstruction. Before the fine, the owner of the vehicle will have to face the mobile court for breaching the law on obstruction.
Some persons are not finding the herald of the new Dawn easy as some of them usually complain that “where we stop is usually too far from where the Ring road that we actually came to. We have to trek some distance, you know, its not easy”. Change is painful but if necessary, lets try to adapt with this herald of new Dawn, beautification need to succeed, if the vehicles keep coming to Ring road to load and off-load passengers, the beautification will not be noticed as we all known what will happened to the flowers that will be planted, and it could frustrate the beautification which has to do with bringing out the Benin City Master Plan, and we all know.

EDSG LIFTS EMBARGO ON EMPLOYMENT.

Edo State Government has lifted the embargo placed on employment in the state civil service by the past administrators. He said the state government decided not to accept the decision of past administrations to place embargo on employment across all sectors of the civil service because of the huge wage bill. In his own words: “I understand and I do fully appreciate the logic and decision by previous governments to retrench and freeze employment. The idea was to cut down the cost of salary personnel cost which is seeing workers as a burden. But I see workers as the most available resource to government and to society”. He noted. According to him, such a resource must be promoted, must be encouraged, he should not be retrenched or freezed out. “We can only break out of poverty by showing courage, not by lamenting.” The comrade Governor, who faulted the decision of the National Council on Establishment for limiting the grade level of civil servants to sixteen, disclosed that workers in the state civil service who merit it can now rise to Grade Level 17. He also said: “The state government has decided to remove the obnoxious policy that states that state civil servants cannot rise beyond Grade Level 16. I think it is wrong and since Edo State draws its powers from the constitution, we decided to set aside that obnoxious policy and to fulfill the promise I made to the civil servants on May 14th”.

Transfering Teachers Who Spent More Than 5 Years In A School

It has been observed that there is a particular worrisome trend in the educational sector of Edo state; Most teachers adopt a "sit-tight" attitude in the urban areas of the state and do not want to be posted to rural areas. This has over a period of time led to an imbalance in the geographic spread of teachers- the urban areas of the state are densely populated while the rural areas have a critical need for teachers.
It is against this backdrop that the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole led administration had stated that teachers would be rotated on a basis of having spent five years in one station.

Information and Communication Technology as a tool for development in Edo State

It is already widely accepted that Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) are an important enabler of growth through the wealth creation, increased productivity and the creation of opportunities.

In the information society where progress and power depends on information and knowledge, the role of ICT becomes even more critical.

The world has reached the age of web 2. 0 with the possibility for individuals who know how to use the computer to create a good personal website and multimedia blogs that are accessible to the entire planet in a matter of minutes. Interaction with the audience, readers and internet surfers in general has also expanded with options for any individual whether known or unknown to send online comments whether moderated or not, from any region of the world.

 ICT was critical in ensuring that most of the revenue due to the government was paid to its coffers, for any government around the world, the main source of funding is tax collection. the money is saved from the use of ICT via the use of biometrics audit and verification to record details of the government's employees, thus eliminating ghost workers and those who falsified their data. Edo State government will now be able to save the salaries usually paid to falsified workers and those promoting their levels. It is based on this and other reasons that Edo State is embarking on a Staff Audit and Verification Exercise (Project SAVE). This saved money can now be used to embark on massive developmental projects that will positively affect the lives of the people of the state.
